How to disclose AI-generated video
Plan visible notices, technical provenance and a reviewable export check for AI-generated or materially edited video.
For video, a visible notice needs to remain discoverable over time and within the frame. A very brief title card can be missed; a persistent or recurring notice is often more robust. Longer content can use a combination of an opening notice, recurring on-screen labels and a description.
Record whether imagery, audio, voice or individual scenes were generated or materially changed. Wording should describe that role precisely without claiming more than the technical evidence supports.
Describe the affected content precisely
“AI-generated video” can be ambiguous when only a voice, background or short scene was generated. Where possible, identify the affected layer:
- “Voice generated with AI”
- “Background modified with AI”
- “Individual scenes are synthetic”
- “Video fully generated with AI”
For deepfake-like depictions, the disclosure should be discoverable when the content is first encountered and should not be obscured by player controls, captions or platform overlays.
Placement, duration and accessibility
Review the disclosure in the actual player. Text should be large enough, provide sufficient contrast and remain on screen long enough to be read. Color alone should not convey the distinction. Where the platform supports captions and audio description, consider including the transparency information in those layers.
Portrait, landscape and square derivatives can require different safe areas. A label that works in a 16:9 master can be cropped out of a 9:16 version.
Inspect the exported video
Video exports can change container data, metadata and provenance information. Inspect the final file rather than only the editing project:
- Check the container format, tracks, codecs, duration and dimensions.
- Play the beginning, middle and end to review disclosure timing.
- Confirm that caption and audio tracks are assigned correctly.
- Re-inspect any Content Credentials or other provenance information.
- Repeat the review after processing by the destination platform.
